Very Vanilla (very + vanilla)

“Vanilla” is a flavor; “vanilla” is also a slang term for something that is plain and drab. “Very Vanilla” (usually capitalized) is a flavor that seemingly promises real, authentic vanilla; “very vanilla” (usually lowercase) is also a slang term meaning very plain or ordinary.

“Very Vanilla” ice cream has been cited in print since at least 1964, 1967 and 1976. Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream has an expired trademark on “Very Vanilla,” with a first use from 1988. “Very Vanilla” ice cream often contains specks of vanilla bean.

Wikipedia: Vanilla
Vanilla is a flavor derived from orchids of the genus Vanilla, primarily from the Mexican species, flat-leaved vanilla (V. planifolia). The word vanilla, derived from the diminutive of the Spanish word vaina (vaina itself meaning sheath or pod), simply translates as little pod. Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican people cultivated the vine of the vanilla orchid, called tlilxochitl by the Aztecs, and Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés is credited with introducing both vanilla and chocolate to Europe in the 1520s.
