“Which do you prefer: chess or sex?”/“It depends on the position.”

Boris Spassky, who was WOrld Chess Champion from 1969 to 1972, was supposedly asked what he liked better, chess or sex? “It depends on the position,” Spassky supposedly answered.

Historical citations of the “chess or sex” question have not been found. “‘Which do I prefer? Chess or sex? It depends on the position.’ - Spassky” was cited in print in 2009.

Boris Spassky was once asked by a reporter, “Which do you prefer: chess or sex?”. Spassky replied “It very much depends on the position”.

8 November 2013, Financial Times (FT.com), “Of chess and men”:
Boris Spassky is once said to have been asked whether he preferred chess to sex, replying coyly: “It depends on the position.” But it depends on the opponent too. The battle between man and machine may have been lost. For pure excitement and spectacle, however, it remains checkmate for flesh and blood.
