“Women cook, men grill”

“Women cook and men grill” (or “men grill and women cook”) is a saying that’s been in use since at least 2006 and is now printed on grilling gift items. Grilling (and dealing with fire) is often shown as a man’s activity, but that’s not always true. Also, many men cook and are expert chefs.

Bacon
Possibly the manliest food available in a grocery environment, bacon is the staple of every meal. Do NOT grill bacon in the nude. In addition wear at least pants, no need to risk getting anything on your junk. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE may a man cook bacon; women may cook bacon even a honorary man, it is not below them to do this because said honorary man has LIMITED man rights. Besides, Men grill, women cook.

Rodale Perfects a Cookbook for Dudes
by Rachel Deahl, PW Daily—Publishers Weekly, 7/24/2006
Publishers have been tapping the male market with grilling books for years, but other cookbooks, well, they still remain largely geared to women. It may not be politically correct to assume but, for the most part, men grill and women cook. Rodale, however, seems to have found a way to speak to guys who don’t favor aprons or haute cuisine. The house’s A Man, A Can, A Plan series has quietly been finding an audience since the first book, which bowed in 2002, hit bookshelves.

Seeking Reasons

The reason why I haven’t written here for a while is directly related to the heatwave affecting Portugal. It has also to do with the fact that it is still considered unpolite to sing someone his Happy Birthdays and surf the net at the same time.

It went amazingly well, though I’m still a bit concerned about the division of tasks based on gender. Women cook, men grill the meat; men take the tables and chairs outside, women set the tables; women take the dirty dishes to the kitchen, men drink and pretend they don’t even see them; women wash the dishes, men talk until women ask them to stand up so they can take the chairs inside.

After that, I knew I had to face my fear. I did a little homework and searched through a mountain of grilling books, most of which - incidentally - were written by men. This fed into a stereotype I did not want to believe: Men grill, women cook.
