"Keep Abilene Boring"is yet another imitation of the popular slogan “Keep Austin Weird.” T-shirts with this slogan were made in 2006.

Other similar Texas city slogans include “Keep San Antonio Lame” and “Keep Dallas Plastic” and “Keep Dallas Pretentious” and “Keep College Station Normal” and “Keep Lubbock Flat” and “Keep Waco Wacko.”

You’ve seen the slogan Keep Austin Weird on T-shirts and bumper stickers. But what about Keep Abilene Boring?

The latter is the slogan on a T-shirt being sold at Monks Coffee Shop, 233 Cypress St., and at its kiosk in Mall of Abilene.

And it’s not a slam at the city, says Monks co-founder and slogan creator Walt Henson.

If being boring means great schools, friendly people and a super downtown, then keep Abilene boring, a sign at Monks says.

‘’I’m from a town of 400 people. Abilene is not boring,’’ Henson said. The shirts are meant to be funny, come in nine colors, and cost $15.

Not much happening here in Abilene.  Austin, where I am spending the weekend (yay!), has a slogan, “Keep Austin Weird”.  Abilene’s unofficial slogan is “Keep Abilene Boring”.  I’m not kidding.  They even have it on a t-shirt.

What it is: A parody of those ‘’Keep Austin Weird’’ T-shirts. Sure, Austin might have Sixth Street and filmmakers running around shooting potential Hollywood blockbusters ... but Abilene has low crime and well-rested people.
