“Patriotism is not obedience to the government. Patriotism is obedience to the principles…”

“Patriotism is not obedience to (the) government. Patriotism is obedience to the principles for which government is supposed to stand” is a saying that has been printed on many images. The saying is usually credited to American historian, playwright, philosopher and socialist thinker Howard Zinn (1922-2010).

Zinn wrote in his book, Declarations of Independence: Cross-examining American Ideology (1990):

“If patriotism were defined, not as blind obedience to government, nor as submissive worship to flags and anthems, but rather as love of one’s country, one’s fellow citizens (all over the world), as loyalty to the principles of justice and democracy, then patriotism would require us to disobey our government, when it violated those principles.”
