“Lubbock is in the middle of everything” (joke)

It’s sometimes said that Lubbock, Texas, is in the middle of nowhere. Lubbock’s nickname is “Hub City of the Plains” or “Hub City.”

However, a joke has it that the ‘Hub City” is actually in the center of everything. This was published on The Ringer on September 13, 2017:

“Lubbock is in the middle of everything: roughly five hours north of San Antonio, five hours east of Santa Fe, five hours south of Oklahoma City, and five hours west of Dallas.”

Wikipedia: Lubbock, Texas
Lubbock (/ˈlʌbək/ LUB-ək) is a city in and the county seat of Lubbock County, Texas, United States. The city is located in the northwestern part of the state, a region known historically and geographically as the Llano Estacado and ecologically is part of the southern end of the High Plains. According to a 2015 Census estimate, Lubbock had a population of 249,042, making it the 83rd-most populous city in the United States of America and the 11th-most populous city in the state of Texas. The city is the economic center of the Lubbock metropolitan area, which has a projected 2020 population of 327,424.

Lubbock’s nickname, “Hub City”, derives from it being the economic, educational, and health care hub of the multicounty region, north of the Permian Basin and south of the Texas Panhandle, commonly called the South Plains.

Kliff Kingsbury Gets Defensive
Texas Tech’s offensive wunderkind built his reputation on points and flash. Now, as the one-time golden boy’s seat grows ever hotter, he’s trying to save his job and reboot the Red Raiders by widening his focus to include something new: defense.

The argument used most often by those in favor of keeping Kingsbury is rooted in an old joke about “The Hub City.” Lubbock is in the middle of everything: roughly five hours north of San Antonio, five hours east of Santa Fe, five hours south of Oklahoma City, and five hours west of Dallas.
