“In Florida we salt margaritas, not sidewalks”

A margarita cocktail is often served in a glass with a salted rim. A cold climate area might use salt on sidewalks and roads to prevent icing. “We salt margaritas, not sidewalks” (or “In Arizona/Florida/Texas we salt margaritas, not sidewalks”) is a saying that has been printed on many images.

”@peterkingMMQB Understand the DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas—ed.) road criticisms, but if we wasted our salt on the roads, we wouldn’t have any left for margarita glasses” was posted on Twitter by Richard Grantvedt on February 6, 2011.

The “salt” saying became popular in Florida advertisements made for cold weather areas in December 2013 and January 2014. “@VSPC Toronto campaign: ‘We Salt Margaritas, Not Sidewalks.’ ‘That’s 19 million impressions in the dead of winter,’—@VSPC’s D.T. Minich” was posted on Twitter by Jamal Thalji on November 13, 2013. “St Petersburg Clearwater @VSPC ad at Ogilvie: We salt margaritas, not sidewalks. #iNeedSun” was posted on Twitter by Virginia Lee on January 10, 2014. “In Florida, we salt Margaritas not Sidewalks. http://fb.me/3AdkerFmU” was posted on Twitter by frankendread on January 25, 2014.

“‘In Arizona - we salt margaritas not sidewalks’  LOL 😊” was posted on Twitter by Calie Waterhouse on February 4, 2014. “In Arizona we salt margaritas not sidewalks” was posted on Twitter by 5DubAz later on February 4, 2014.

“In Texas we salt margaritas, not sidewalks” was posted on Twitter by Gerry Fluharty on March 4, 2014. “IN TEXAS WE SALT MARGARITAS, NOT SIDEWALKS” (Shown on a restaurant sign.—ed.) was posted on Twitter by El Arroyo on February 22, 2019.

Wikipedia: Margarita
A margarita is a cocktail consisting of tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice often served with salt on the rim of the glass. The drink is served shaken with ice (on the rocks), blended with ice (frozen margarita), or without ice (straight up). Although it has become acceptable to serve a margarita in a wide variety of glass types, ranging from cocktail and wine glasses to pint glasses and even large schooners, the drink is traditionally served in the eponymous margarita glass, a stepped-diameter variant of a cocktail glass or champagne coupe.

They sand the roads when it snows in Texas. Like beach sand. I guess people want to save the salt for the rim of our margarita glasses.
