Big Pineapple (Honolulu, Hawaii nickname)

Honolulu, Hawaii, is sometimes called the “Big Pineapple” because of Hawaii’s role in the pineapple-growing industry. The “Big Pineapple” nickname followed the 1970s popularization of New York City’s nickname, the “Big Apple.”

“MICHELE DONATO and ANN CATALINE confessed it would be tough to return to the Big Apple after their first visit to the Big Pineapple” was printed in the Honolulu (HI) Star-Bulletin on September 5, 1977. “If New York is the Big Apple, does that make Honolulu the Big Pineapple?” was printed in the Honolulu (HI) Advertiser on March 30, 1981. “In 1982 The Hawaii Express was a scheduled passenger airline that operated flights between Los Angeles, California and Honolulu, Hawaii. It was nicknamed “The Big Pineapple” and started service with one Boeing 747 aircraft” was posted on Twitter by “Pamela Greyson’s LOST LOS ANGELES Est. 2008” on August 1, 2019.

NEW YORK IS the Big Apple, which has spawned a number of other fruity nicknames. Atlanta is the Big Peach, Sacramento is the Big Tomato and Honolulu is the Big Pineapple. Tel Aviv calls itself the Big Orange, while Kuala Lumpur is the Big Durian, in honor of a spiky, foul-smelling fruit. We can add the Big Persimmon (Tokyo) and Big Mango (Bangkok). And Superman’s hometown, Metropolis, is the Big Apricot.

HONOLULU: THE BIG PINEAPPLE
DECEMBER 18, 2014 J2TRAVELS
J-Squared Travel is traveling across the ocean to The Big Pineapple: Honolulu. Honolulu is the largest and capital city of the Aloha State on the island of Oahu. The reason Honolulu is called the Big Pineapple is because James Dole, the founder of the Hawaiian Pineapple Company (also known as Dole) developed the pineapple industry in Honolulu. Honolulu is no doubt a tropical paradise and a must-see for anybody who is looking for a relaxing vacation and breath-taking views of nature.
