University of Texas at Omaha

The University of Texas at Austin Longhorns have been so successful in baseball that the school has been nicknamed “The University of Texas at Omaha,” after the College World Series of Omaha.  T-shirts with “The University of Texas at Omaha” have been sold since at least 2009.

Augie Garrido became the baseball coach in 1997 and the Longhorns baseball team went to the College World Series six consecutive years (2000-06), winning two national championships (2002 and 2005). However, “The University of Texas at Omaha” was cited in a Google Groups message board on June 2, 1996—before Garrido became coach.

The eight teams are split into two, four-team, double-elimination brackets, with the winner of each bracket playing in the best-of-three championship series. The tournament takes place in June of each year.

Coaching career
Garrido is currently the coach of the Longhorns of The University of Texas at Austin, where he has coached since 1997 and amassed a record of 666-301-1 (.688) prior to the 2012 campaign.

Garrido’s teams have won five national titles (1979, 1984, 1995, 2002, 2005). He is one of only two coaches, along with Andy Lopez, to lead teams from more than one school (California State University, Fullerton and Texas) to national titles, and is the first coach to guide teams to national championships in four different decades.

Where have you gone Texas baseball ???
That’s the question I’ve started asking myself these last few weeks…. really months.
The team with the highest winning percentage in Division-1 history (.740).
The team with 77 conference titles and 34 College World Series appearances, both records.
The team that went to the College World Series six consecutive years (2000-06) and holds the mark for the most trips to Rosenblatt.
This team, in the Augie Garrido era, has appeared in nine CWS’s, with two national championships in four title game appearances.
This team influenced the masses into being coined,” The University of Texas at Omaha.”
The Texas Longhorns were the standard for NCAA Div-1 baseball.
