Zydecajun (zydeco + Cajun)

American Cajun singer Wayne Toups has called his brand of music “zydecajun” (zydeco + Cajun). The name “Zydecajun” is also the formal name of his group that recorded an album in 1985. Toups’ “zydecajun” also adds rock music to the mix.

The untrademarked term “zydecajun” is almost exclusively associated with Wayne Toups, but potentially could be a music genre shared by many musicians.

In fact, it’s a combination of Cajun, Zydeco, Southern Rock and a little soul he’s coined as “Zydecajun.”

“It’s a musical blend of genres,” Toups said. “I put it into a lil’ bowl and started stirrin’ the music with passion and the squeeze box and coined the blend.”

He sings the music half in the Cajun French dialect and half in English. Toups said it gives him an opportunity to explain the meaning of the music to the younger generation through the four to five styles of music he grew up listening to.
