Bank of Apartheid (Bank of America nickname)

Bank of America is one of the Big Four of America’s banks (along with Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo).

Bank of America was nicknamed “Bank of Apartheid” since at least 1978 because of its involvement with South Africa. The term was frequently used in the 1980s, but became dated with South Africa’s new government in the 1990s. The nickname “Bank of Apartheid” is still used by some today, especially those who feel that the bank isn’t fair to blacks or other minorities.

Bank of America has other unflattering nicknames, including “Bank of Amerika/Amerikkka” (cited in print since 1970), “Bunch of Assholes” (cited in print since 2000),  “Bank of Assholes” (cited in print since 2003), “Skank of America” (cited in print since 2003), “Stank of America” (cited in print since 2005), “Bank of Failmerica” (cited in print since 2009) and “Bankster of America” (cited in print since 2009).

An article about protests outside more than 400 branches of Bank of America across California on November 17, 1978. The demonstrations were coordinated by Stop Banking on Apartheid ($top Banking on Apartheid), the California branch of a world-wide movement that seeks to cut off western loans to South Africa.

14 May 1985, Sacramento (CA) Bee, “Students rip into apartheid; Tutu addresses rally at UC Davis,” pg. B1:
Traffic along a five-block stretch of the downtown area was diverted by police as protesters marched from Mrak Hall to the bank with signs that read ‘B of A: Bank of Apartheid’ and ‘Don’t Bank on Apartheid.’ Branch manager Dick Youmans defended the bank’s policies in South Africa.
