Carmageddon (car + Armageddon); Carpocalypse (car + apocalypse)

“Carmageddon” (car + Armageddon) is the title of a computer game, trademarked since 1997; “Carpocalyse Now”(car + apocalypse) is the title of a computer game, trademarked since 1998. Both “carmageddon” and “carpocalypse” have been used in many others ways, such as describing car crashes or disastrous car sales.

In 1998, a New York City group called “Carmaggedon” fought for bicyclists against cars in a battle for New York City’s streets. In 2007, Paul Steely White, executive director of Transportation Alternatives, called New York’s traffic situation “Carmageddon.”

In July 2011, both “carmageddon” and “carpocalypse” were used to describe the traffic problems in Los Angeles, California, by the 10-mile closing of the 405 freeway.

“Airmageddon” (air + Armageddon) is a related term involving airplanes. “Trainmageddon”/“Trainageddon” (train + Armageddon) is a related term involving trains.

Livingstone defies predictions of “Carmageddon!” and starts the congestion charging system: five quid to drive into the center city. Sixty thousand vehicles disappear from the streets; the amount of time people spend stuck in traffic drops 26 percent. In New York, Queens City Council members pressure Bloomberg to allow single-passenger vehicles back onto the East River bridges. He relents.

One study found that gridlock saps about $13 billion a year from the New York economy, said Paul Steely White, executive director of Transportation Alternatives, a nonprofit advocacy group that has dubbed New York’s traffic situation “Carmageddon.”
