Cocktail Conservative

A “cocktail conservative” has also been called a “country club conservative/Republican” or a “hot tub” Republican. The term “cocktail conservative” describes someone who is rich and who attends cocktail parties, but who doesn’t have the experience or the values of average Americans.

“Cocktail conservative” has been cited in print since at least 1998. A similar term—used to describe a Democrat—is “limousine liberal.”

Some cocktail conservatives in The Weekly Standard and elsewhere are calling for the reinvasion of Iraq by U.S. ground forces as a way to put an end to Saddam Hussein. Haven’t any of these people seen “Saving Private Ryan”? A Vietnam-born Marine officer describes folks like the magazine militarists as “invincible in peace, invisible in war.”

I wonder how the cocktail conservatives will handle this. Bush must have al qaida pretty ticked off these days. And as long as he has them ticked off, any conservative with any sense would support him. But no, says George Will, Bush supporters are “neocons”, he says. “Neo” as in neo-nazi, “con” as in con artist. Yeah. I hope the cocktail conservatives keep talking and show us what lapdogs they are for the left.

Yeah, the Neocons and Paleocons are both saying “anyone who criticizes Palin is a dead man walking”. I believe a Bush advisor used those actual words. David Frum and Ann Althouse are already being shunned as “cocktail conservatives”.

Well, the only conclusion I can seem to come to is that both Noonan and Parker are of the “Cocktail Conservative” crowd. A group of people who claim to subscribe to the ideals of conservatism over a glass of wine during dinner, but in actual daily practice will only admit to such ideals if means that they will remain politically relevant.

David Brooks is nothing but an effete pseudo-intellectual and cocktail conservative who spends his time getting felt up by senators and contemplating Obama’s pant-crease. And now we know he doesn’t much like democracy, either.

Do not make the mistake of believing that the Washington cocktail conservative crowd will support you either. I point directly to the punditry that one endures when watching Fox news.
