Fat Antonio (San Antonio nickname)

The city of San Antonio is often surveyed to have some of the fattest people in the United States. Some attribute this to the warm weather, which forces people to stay indoors in air-conditioned rooms. Others blame the breakfast tacos and the enchiladas.

Sports talk show host Jim Rome called San Antonio “Fat Antonio” by 1997. Unfortunately, the name—like the fat—stuck.

Wikipedia: San Antonio, Texas
San Antonio (pronounced /ˌsænænˈtoʊnioʊ/) is the second-largest city in the state of Texas and the seventh-largest in the United States of America. Located in the northern part of South Texas, the city is a cultural gateway into the American Southwest. San Antonio is the seat of Bexar County with a population just under 1.3 million as of the 2006 U.S. Census estimate, as well as the 4th fastest growing large city in the nation from 2000-2006 in terms of percentage. Its metropolitan area has a population of over 1.9 million and is the 29th-largest metropolitan area in the U.S.

San Antonio was named for the Italian Saint Anthony of Padua, whose feast day it was (June 13) when a Spanish expedition stopped in the area in 1691. The city has a strong military presence—it is home to Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base, Randolph Air Force Base, and Brooks City-Base, with Camp Bullis and Camp Stanley right outside the city. San Antonio is home to the South Texas Medical Center, the only medical research and care provider in the South Texas region.

Famous for its River Walk, the Alamo, Tejano culture, and home to the SeaWorld San Antonio and Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme parks, the city is visited by 20 million tourists per year. San Antonio is also home to the first museum of modern art in Texas—the Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum, as well as one of the most successful National Basketball Association teams in league history, the San Antonio Spurs.

In Jim Rome’s world, nothing is more epic than running good smack and having a blowtorch signal blasting it across the country.

Except maybe “amping’’ somebody out or hearing a caller go ``orenthal.’’ That explains why the Southern California talk-show host will be in San Antonio this weekend, expounding his brash and opinionated sports discussion to ``clones’’ and bringing converts into ``The…

I see your point but I disagree that it’s not usually good entertainment and that’s what the show is all about.  Sure some calls are bad but that’s what the hammer is for.  Sure H-Town bashes on Fat-Antonio but it’s great to hear one ‘neck call another ‘neck an even bigger ‘neck as long as the reason is funny.

Jim Rome, the foul-mouthed sports radio broadcaster of the moment, has arrived in what he calls Fat Antonio. “San Antonio, in the latest census figures, was shown to be the fourth-fattest city in America, and looking around Hoop City, I would have to say it’s at least that, if not more,” Rome said on his national radio show Thursday.

“Man, there are some fat people here,” he said at the Convention Center, site this week of the…

The late 1990s saw San Antonio - touted in travel and tourist circles as one of America’s four unique cities - also ranked as one of America’s most obese. Jim Rome, a trash-talking sports radio and TV broadcaster, came to town and dubbed it Fat Antonio. Locals joked about Mexican food, and chefs pointed to fried seafood and a lard-laden diet.

The heavy jokes began after a 1997 report from the Coalition for Excess Risk Education found that 32.9 percent of San Antonio…

Indeed it is, for the Spurs are beloved in San Antonio, a city that the hometown Express-News last week noted has been “deemed the fattest in the United States and derided as ‘Fat Antonio.’” Which might have something to do with the surplus of signs, on restaurant marquees throughout the city, for something called a Breakfast Taco.
