A SHORT HISTORY - AND FUTURE - OF TRADER JOE'S
Trader Joe's actually began in 1958 as a chain of convenience stores called "Pronto Markets" in the Los Angeles area. In 1967, the founder, Joe Coulombe, the original Trader Joe, wanted to expand the stores' offerings and enhance their image. He doubled the floor space and offered hard-to-find, boutique domestic and imported wines and gourmet food items at outstanding prices. He decked out the stores with cedar plank walls and nautical décor and garbed the Captain (the store manager), the First Mate (the assistant manager) and the Crew Members in colorful Hawaiian shirts. "Trader Joe's" was born.
Currently Trader Joe's has expanded to over 200 stores in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington.
T.J.'s Polishes Big Apple
4/21/06 After much hype and anticipation, Trader Joe's,
Los Angeles, CA, burst into New York City with a bang. The
opening of its first Manhattan location on March 17th, was
nothing short of successful. With lines to enter, lines to exit,
lines to sample, and lines to pay, one can see that T.J.'s is
off to a promising start in the Big Apple.
Although many of the products offered are similar to its other
250 locations, T.J.'s NYC, according to Supermarket News,
will acclimate to its Manhattan market by including more
frequent deliveries, smaller delivery trucks, and more cash
registers. It will be the only location to offer home delivery
and a soup and sandwich area, and the décor is suited for
the local market with numerous word plays such as
"Breadway," Grand Sample Station," and "Snacks in the
And at Grand Sample Station (ahem), "crew members" shouted out today's free samples: Irish soda bread and scones. With organic buttter, of course.

But then I saw the line. It snaked past the energy bars and over through the dairy section, down past the Grand Sample Station (everything at TJ's has cutesy names) and into the meat case.
