There are many accidents on many streets and highways, all around the world. Many roadways are unfortunately nicknamed “Death Street” or “Death Avenue” or “Boulevard of Death” or “Highway of Death.” There was a “Highway of Death” in the first Persian Gulf War.
Texas State Highway 195 (SH 195) has been called a “Highway of Death,” but the unflattering nickname could also be applied to many other highways as well.

Texas State Highway 195, or SH 195, runs from FM 439 in Killeen, TX, south to Interstate 35 in Georgetown. In Killeen it is known as Fort Hood Street; in Florence it is called Patterson Avenue. The Texas Memorial Highway System has designated the entire road as the Phantom Warriors Highway.

There are several reasons for the construction project. The road was once known in Central Texas as the “Highway of Death,” since 21 people lost their lives in accidents on this highway between 1996 and 1998. Given the proximity of Fort Hood, the nickname was probably an allusion to the real Highway of Death which was the site of a significant battle during the Persian Gulf War.

The list could be 100% factually correct. TX State Highway 195 may be the official “Highway of Death” for TX but still not hang with the big boys in other states.

Several years ago, the Army closed Highway 195 to soldiers because many were getting in killed in traffic crashes. Some Killeen residents even nicknamed it the “Highway of Death.”
