Hippie Sandwich (Hippie Burger)

A “hippie sandwich” is the vegetarian sandwich on the menu at the Shady Grove restaurant at 1624 Barton Springs Road (“restaurant row”) in Austin. It’s not to be confused with the “hippie sandwich” that Alembic, Inc. uses to make guitars.

Various Austin restaurants have copied the idea, changing the name to “hippie burger.”

About Shady Grove
Shady Grove opened its doors to customers in January of 1992. Nestled under the shade of a tall pecan grove just minutes from dowtown, the restaurant fast became an Austin favorite.

Wikipedia: Alembic, Inc.
Alembic was founded in 1969 and is a manufacturer of high-end electric basses, guitars and preamps.
(...)
Alembic’s 4 string basses were usually based on a five piece multi-laminate through neck using various combinations of maple, purpleheart, walnut, cherry and ebony. This construction technique inspired the nickname “hippie sandwich” basses. By 1979 maple and purpleheart was the standard.

Wikipedia: Tiger (guitar)
Tiger was Jerry Garcia’s main guitar from 1979 to 1990. It was built by Sonoma County luthier Doug Irwin. The Tiger is named after the tiger inlaid on the preamp cover located on the guitar’s top, just behind the tailpiece. The body features several layers of wood laminated together face-to-face in a configuration referred to as a “Hippie sandwich” by employees of Alembic Inc., where Irwin worked for a brief period in the early 1970s.

Eat at Shady Grove.  This is one of my favorite restaurants located near Barton Springs and Zilker Park.  Outdoor casual dining makes it unique.  There are many local restaurants here in Austin, but Shady Grove is one of the best.  You should have the cheese fries.  For the vegetarians out there, there is the hippie burger. Lots of great stuff for the rest of you too!!
