“Home of the 7 oz. Burger” (Jackson Hole)
Jackson Hole has eight locations in New York City. Since 1973, its slogan has been "Home of the 7 oz. Burger" -- although the burgers are usually even larger than that!

The culinary reviews in the New York Times haven't been favorable for this big burger, but the places remain popular.

27 June 1979, New York Times, pg. C18:
For a taste of home, Miss Parker prefers Jackson Hole, Wyoming, 1633 Second Avenue at the corner of 85th Street, and Jackson Hole Burger Shop, 232 East 64th Street, "where the hamburgers are steamed and served with mustard and mayonnaise, like they are in Texas."

4 March 1994, New York Times, "Following the Scent: On the Trail of the Best Burgers in Town" by Eric Asimov, pg. C28:
Jackson Hole
517 Columbus Avenue, at 85th Street, (212) 362-5177.

This restaurant, which has several branches scattered around New York City, specializes in burgers. It is unusual in its practice of reverse hyperbole: the menu promises 7-ounce burgers (28 varieties, in fact) but their actual weight could be twice that. It's a pity the restaurant doesn't do something better with all that meat. As the burgers cook on a griddle, they are covered with a metal cup, which produces a juiceless, gray, steamed texture by the time they reach the table. The undistinguished burgers ($4.25) are matched by equally pallid fries. It's too bad, because the restaurant, with its bright pub atmosphere and friendly service, is pleasant enough and the crowds continue to come.

27 December 2002, New York Times, "Getting Away Right in Town" by Mimi Sheraton, pg. E43:
Speaking of hamburgers, no prices are low enough to justify the wild popularity of Jackson Hole. This disorderly outpost features a dismal wet, crumbly burger -- more like a slab of meatloaf that has been through the dishwasher.

15 January 2003, New York Times, "The Burger Takes Center Stage" by Ed Levine, pg. F6:
This obsession with size can be traced to the opening of the first Jackson Hole restaurant in 1973, which served 10-ounce burgers then as now. But bigger is not necessarily better. Unless the ground beef used in the burger is of sufficiently high quality, a diner vcan end up eating a pile of mushy, tasteless meat. It is also worth noting that bigger burgers also invariably overwhelm their buns, resulting in a dripping mess.
