“Live Strong” is that motto that appeared in May 2004 on yellow wristbands, sponsored by the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Millions of wristbands were sold at $1 each, with proceeds going to cancer research.
 
The Lance Armstrong Foundation has since trademarked “Livestrong” for the foundation’s name.

Copycats try to cash in on yellow wristband craze

AUSTIN—Charities and causes of all stripes are rushing to cash in on the popularity of the Lance Armstrong Foundation’s yellow wristband.

The silicone rubber bracelets produced by the cycling superstar’s cancer-fighting organization bears the motto “Live Strong.’’

The Austin American-Statesman reports the foundation has sold 20 million wristbands at $1 each. Proceeds go toward programs for young people with cancer.

Now, other groups are marketing a rainbow of wristbands to promote awareness of everything from breast cancer to high medical malpractice premiums for doctors.

University of Texas marketing professor Julie Irwin expects that the more spinoff bracelets are sold, the less fashionable they’ll become.

But the Armstrong Foundation doesn’t worry about copycats—as long as they don’t use the trademarked “Live Strong’’ slogan.
