Nature’s Sports Drink (water/coconut water/milk nickname)

Sports energy drinks (such as Red Bull) became popular in the 1990s; the sports drink Gatorade was developed in 1965. Several drinks have been called “nature’s sports drink.” Fabio’s book, Fabio Fitness (1995), declared that “water is nature’s sports drink.”

“Keep your motor running with milk, nature’s sports drink” was printed in Runner’s World magazine in 1997. Kelly Shriver, a dietitian, told the Atlanta (GA) Journal Constitution in 2005 that milk is “nature’s sports drink.” An Internet post in 2011 was titled “Chocolate milk = ‘nature’s sports drink’.”

Coconut water is frequently called “nature’s sports drink” and Zico coconut water trademarked the term, claiming a first commercial use in May 2007. However, “I can totally see that (coconut water—ed.) as nature’s sports drink” was an Internet post in April 2007.

To dietitian Kelly Schriver, milk is the nectar of the gods, a drink as suited for a state dinner as a bottle of Dom Perignon. “Milk has nine essential vitamins and minerals,” said Schriver, adding that milk is even “nature’s sports drink.” “It’s a great option,” Schriver said.

I’ve been drinking Coconut Water lately..i think i’m addicted to the stuff. It makes a great energy drink..it’s light and refreshing and has a lot of good stuff in it and is pretty low in calories. It’s also good to drink to prevent hangovers or to help when you have one ;O

The sugary stuff you find at some stores cannot be good for you.
But man, last time I had a vacation in Costa Rica, it cost pennies for a cool young coconut with the top cut off. Stick a straw in it….eh very niiice. I can totally see that as nature’s sports drink. Diluted with 20 or 30% spring water too, for the serious athlete;).

Coconut Water, Nature’s Sports Drink
MARCH 1, 2011 7:29 PM TINA
Coconut water is the clear liquid found inside a young green coconut.  Coconut water and coconut milk are not the same thing.  As the coconut fruit ripens the water is replaced by the coconut meat.  Coconut water is very hydrating and naturally rich in electrolytes with a slight nut flavor.  It contains twice the potassium of a typical banana and is low in calories.  It’s a natural isotonic beverage which means it is a solution that has the same salt concentration as the normal cells of the body and the blood.  In other words, coconut water has the same level of electrolytic balance as we have in our blood.

Chocolate milk = “nature’s sports drink”
Got a kick out of this article on chocolate milk presented at a conference recently. Mostly what we already know, but would like to see statements based on studies with subject pools larger than n=32 and n=10.
