“Nipples to the wind”

“Nipples to the Wind” is the title of a play of Texas monologues by Paula Coco. Coco describes the phrase to mean “head up, chin out,” and says that “nipples to the wind” is an old Southern expression.

“Nipples to the wind” does not appear very often in print. The phrase was filed for a trademark for athletic gear in 2000, before the titled play was written.

Although it may sound like the latest title at Deja Vu Love Boutique, stand-up comedian Paula Coco won’t be baring anything but her Texas roots during “Nipples to the Wind,” presented on two North County stages starting this week.

The salty stage production addresses some mature themes, but the title is an old Southern expression that means “Head up, chin out,” or as a popular Texas saying has it, “Put on your big-girl panties and deal with it.”

Nipples To The Wind
A Letter From the Playwright
Growing up in Texas was where I first heard the expression “nipples to the wind.” Southerners have always been big on euphemisms, and frankly I think it is a much more colorful way to say, “head UP, chin OUT!” I feel this expression truly reflects the attitude of every one of these fourteen characters.
