HIP was founded in the 1940s as a prepaid group practice health plan conducting business in New York City, Long Island and Westchester. Today, we are a health care company that offers a broad spectrum of group and network-based health care products including HMO, PPO, POS and EPO plans, and ASO services to approximately 1.4 million individuals in New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

The re-election of Dr. Willard C. Rappleye, dean of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, as chairman of the board of directors of the Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York by the board at is annual meeting on Thursday at the new HIP headquarters, 425 Avenue of the Americas, was announced yesterday by Dr. John J. Wittmer, executor vice president. HIP, the first large-scale community plan for all-inclusive, pre-paid medical care for employed New Yorkers, will begin operation this fall.

Wide acceptance of the "advice" would seriously affect not only the Health Insurance Plan or Greater New York, or H.I.P., as it is known, but many other voluntary health insurance plans, some of which have been in existence for more than fifty years.
