7 January 1996, New York Times, pg. CY6:
The B.I.D. wants to replace the 111 parking meters between the Avenue of the Americas and Broadway with as few as six "pay-and-display" machines. A driver deposits coins in a machine and gets a receipt to (be -- ed.) displayed on the dashboard.

12 October 1997, New York Times, pg. CY6:
Multispace meters work like the pay-and-display systems used in Europe, where tickets indicating exact parking and expiration times are dispensed by machine and displayed on car dashboards. Tested this year on West Eighth Street in Greenwich Village, they will be installed at 20,000 spaces on streets and in municipal lots and garages before year's end.
