“Rockapulco” (Rockaway + Acapulco) has been a nickname for Rockaway Beach since at least the 1980s. Acapulco is a famous Mexican resort area; in 1964, a The Flinstones cartoon episode had Fred and Wilma Flintstone visit “Rockapulco.” A series of summer events in Rockaway now carries the “Rockapulco” name.

Rockaway Beach is a neighborhood on the Rockaway Peninsula in the New York City borough of Queens. It is located on the South Shore of Long Island. The community stretches between the Atlantic Ocean and Jamaica Bay, running from approximately Beach 73rd Street to Beach 98th Street. The neighborhood is bounded by Arverne to the east and Rockaway Park to the west. Acapulco (Officially: Acapulco de Juárez) is a city and major sea port in the state of Guerrero on the Pacific coast of Mexico, 300 km (190 miles) southwest from Mexico City. As of the 2005 census, the population of the urbanized area was 616,394, while that of the administrative municipality was 717,766 people. The dandies have their Hamptons, but the multitude has the Rockaways, a sandy swath in southern Queens that lays up on the Atlantic.
 
There is a good beach there at 116th Street that they call Rockapulco. There is a jitney that will take you there. It is called the Q53 bus. It costs $1.50 and it starts in Woodside, winds through central Queens and drops you at the head of the beach.

During the golden summer weekends from May 15 to Sept. 30, no public parking is allowed on the streets. Pizzas are delivered to the beach wall. Dr. Steve Arikian on Beach 147th Street calls his home Rockapulco, and wears a sun-faded T-shirt that for him, and many others in Rockaway, says it all: ‘‘Rockaway Beach. It’s not a peninsula, it’s a lifestyle.’’
