Rockapulco (Rockaway Beach)

“Rockapulco” (Rockaway + Acapulco) has been a nickname for Rockaway Beach since at least the 1980s. Acapulco is a famous Mexican resort area; in 1964, a The Flinstones cartoon episode had Fred and Wilma Flintstone visit “Rockapulco.” A series of summer events in Rockaway now carries the “Rockapulco” name.

Wikipedia: Rockaway Beach, Queens
Rockaway Beach is a neighborhood on the Rockaway Peninsula in the New York City borough of Queens. It is located on the South Shore of Long Island. The community stretches between the Atlantic Ocean and Jamaica Bay, running from approximately Beach 73rd Street to Beach 98th Street. The neighborhood is bounded by Arverne to the east and Rockaway Park to the west. It is named for Rockaway Beach, which is the largest urban beach in the United States, stretching for miles along the Rockaway Peninsula facing the Atlantic Ocean. The beach is run and operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Rockaway Beach was once known as the “Irish Riviera” because of the large Irish American population in the area. As of the United States Census, 2000, 25.4% of residents in ZIP Code 11693 identified themselves as having Irish ancestry.

It’s these folks who have been raising eyebrows along Rockaway’s 7.5 miles of beaches, because the ‘‘Rockapulco’’ Surfers know that the Brooklyn Surfers are as dedicated to wave-riding as they are. Maybe more. Because where you can’t see surf, you must think it. All the time. N.B.W. Nothing But Waves.

NEIGHBORHOOD REPORT: BENDING ELBOWS; Party Time in Rockapulco, Hamptons West
By CHARLIE LEDUFF
Published: July 22, 2001
The dandies have their Hamptons, but the multitude has the Rockaways, a sandy swath in southern Queens that lays up on the Atlantic.

There is a good beach there at 116th Street that they call Rockapulco. There is a jitney that will take you there. It is called the Q53 bus. It costs $1.50 and it starts in Woodside, winds through central Queens and drops you at the head of the beach.

During the golden summer weekends from May 15 to Sept. 30, no public parking is allowed on the streets. Pizzas are delivered to the beach wall. Dr. Steve Arikian on Beach 147th Street calls his home Rockapulco, and wears a sun-faded T-shirt that for him, and many others in Rockaway, says it all: ‘‘Rockaway Beach. It’s not a peninsula, it’s a lifestyle.’’

Fortunately, Rockaway’s full of people more interested in helping than in getting 15 minutes of fame. Many firefighters remarked how helpful the neighbors were—-a place that makes Rockapulco like no other.

LAST STOP ON THE ROCKAPULCO
Skip the velvet rope and bring your flip-flops to this unexpected urban beach town.
By Jaime Jordan
For a two-buck subway ride, you can swim in the same crisp Atlantic Ocean as the label whores on the far east end of Long Island. Rockaway Beach is to the Hamptons what Williamsburg is to the Meatpacking District, so shake off your Saturday morning hangover and head to Queens this summer. The Rockapulco peninsula juxtaposes urban grit with classic seashore. You won’t have to shell out $51 for the Jitney, and you won’t have to sleep in an overcrowded, overpriced summer share that reeks of body odor and cigarette smoke.
