A “Southwest Burger” (or “Southwestern Burger") is a hamburger with Southwestern ingredients. Although the ingredients vary, guacamole appears to be the most popular.
Other popular ingredients for this burger include pico de gallo, chipotle mayo, jalapeños and salsa. Chili is almost never included; a “Southwest Burger” with chili would probably be renamed a “Chili Burger.”

The Plaza Inn had some interesting sandwiches. A teriyaki chicken breast sandwich, a Southwest burger of some kind, and a Kielbasa wrap. The Southwest burger had jack cheese and ortega chile, the teriyaki chicken breast had, well teriyaki sauce and chicken.

Guacamole Makes The Difference

A tasty summertime dish is a thick, spicy burger hot off the grill, topped with some cool guacamole. Although my guacamole has a bit of a kick to it, the creamy texture is a nice contrast to this big juicy burger.
¾ pound ground sirloin
¾ pound ground beef (about 85% lean)
½ c. white onion, finely chopped
½ c. green pepper, finely chopped
1 jalapeño, finely chopped
3 to 4 fresh sage leaves, chopped (about 1 teaspoon)
1 tsp. chili powder
½ tsp. salt
½ tsp. pepper
Combine all ingredients and form into four patties. Grill over hot coals until desired doneness. Serve on buns with lettuce and tomato and topped with guacamole.
