When a Texan is away from Texas (or, conversely for example, a New Orleans citizen escapes Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and moves to Texas), the term “Texas exile” or “Texile” is sometimes used. In 2005, a few New Orleans Hurricane Katrina evacuees settled in Austin and formed a band called “The Texiles.” However, the term “Texile” has so far been very rarely used.
 
“Texpatriate” or “Texpat” is a similar term to “Texile.”  A more popular term than “Texile” among Hurricane Katrina evacuees has been “Texodus” or “Texas exodus.”

It is with heavy heart that I report that Walter The Wolfman has already played the Maple Leaf, the Vieu Carre seems set to re-open fully and even the VoodooFest is returning (gulp) for a day. As we all know these are glimmers of hope but the work is just beginning. The stories of New Orleans musicians of all genres are unfolding in cities all across america. Indeed music has always mirrored the great textiles of our melting pot republic, but now a band called the Textiles (”The Texas Exiles”) emerges from kaos to produce sounds that embody the reaux seeping into music scenes from Austin to San Francisco to Baltimore. The Textiles, so I have heard, are comprised of members of the Iguanas and the Radiators with extras like Dave Alvyn sitting in.

Cyril Neville joins his nephew Ivan Neville, as well as the Radiators and the Iguanas (who are scheduled to play at FitzGerald’s in Berwyn on New Year’s Eve), as popular New Orleans acts who have settled in Austin. Some even perform in an ad hoc band known as the Texiles.

What’s the best inducement to clerking in Texas? The food. As an exile from the great state of Texas (a Texile?), I can honestly say that I miss the Tex-Mex food more than anything else. I have never found authentic Tex-Mex outside of Texas, and certainly not in the Northeast. And, as the linked article explains, it really is an authentic American cuisine, not a corrupt form of Mexican food.
