1904 Sandwich

New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) teamed up with the sandwich shop Alidoro and Katz’s Delicatessen in September 2022 to create the “1904 Sandwich.” The first subway ride was on October 27, 1904.

The MTA described the 1904 Sandwich (priced at $14):

“A tantalizing combination of Katz’s deli pastrami, garlic confit cream, Calabrian pepper dijon slaw, and aged provolone, all on a fresh rye sourdough long roll.”

The city’s mass transit system is an essential and affordable key to unlocking exciting experiences in New York City, and The 1904 celebrates the system’s anniversary. The first subway train departed City Hall station on October 27th, 1904, forever changing the way New Yorkers would navigate the city. Today, that system continues to connect New Yorkers and visitors alike to delightful experiences that are just a MetroCard swipe or an OMNY tap away.

KATZ’S DELICATESSEN AND ALIDORO PARTNER WITH MTA TO INTRODUCE “1904 SANDWICH”
October 4, 2022
Last Thursday, September 29, the MTA announced a partnership between two legendary New York City sandwich institutions: Katz’s Delicatessen and Italian sandwich shop Alidoro, which began in SoHo in 1986. The shops have collaborated on the 1904 Sandwich, which takes its name from the year that New York City’s first subway opened to the public. The sandwich will be sold at four Manhattan locations of Alidoro through October 31.

On Thursday, MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber, Alidoro CEO and Owner Jon Streep, and Katz’s owner Jake Dell gave away some samples at Moynihan Train Hall near the Alidoro shop. Katz’s Deli and Alidoro created a sandwich on fresh rye sourdough baked daily by Newlight Breadworks with Katz’s pastrami, confit garlic cream, Calabrian pepper dijon slaw, and aged provolone.
(...)
The 1904 Sandwich is wrapped in a Massimo Vignelli-inspired subway map design with a Katz’s and Alidoro logo and an illustration of Alidoro’s locations (Vignelli designed the New York City subway map in 1972). They cost $14, though the MTA Away lunchbox deal for $17 includes a cookie and a bag of chips.
