“A businessman is someone to whom age brings golf instead of wisdom”

Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) wrote in 1903 about “these cricketers to whom age brings golf instead of wisdom.” The Chicago (IL) Tribune in 1905 gave the epigram, “To many a man age brings golf instead of wisdom.”

The “cricketer” was replaced with the “businessman” in versions printed in the 2000s. “Businessmen to whom age brings golf instead of wisdom” was cited in 2004. “A businessman is someone to whom age brings golf instead of wisdom” was cited in 2007.

Well, we two know these transfigured persons, these college passmen, these well groomed monocular Algys and Bobbies, these cricketers to whom age brings golf instead of wisdom, these plutocratic products of “the nail and sarspan business as he got his money by.”

However, the concept needs to be thought about and the leisured classes at least enjoy the advantage of having plenty of thinking time at their disposal, provided they can first be converted away from imitating George Bernard Shaw’s stereotype of “Businessmen to whom age brings golf instead of wisdom.”
