“A hypocrite is someone who’s not themselves on Sunday”

“A hypocrite is a person who is not himself on Sunday” is a saying that has been printed on several images. Sunday is traditionally the day when Christians go to church, and a hypocrite might show people a different self. The saying has several slight variations and is of uncertain authorship.

“‘A hypocrite is a fellow who is not himself on Sundays.’ VERNON K. BROOKS, Resident Pastor” was printed in the Lead (SD) Daily Call on December 7, 1940. “A hypocrite is a fellow who is not himself on Sundays.—Truth” was printed in the Oklahoma City (OK) Star on January 10, 1941. “A hypocrite is a fellow who is not himself on Sundays.—Marie Dornfield” was printed in the Chicago (IL) Daily Tribune on May 8, 1953.

“Food for Thought: ‘A hypocrite is a person who is not himself on Sunday’” was printed in the Hattiesburg (MS) American on January 27, 1990. “Gem of the Day: A hypocrite is a person who is not himself on Sunday” was printed in the syndicated Ann Landers column in the The Vidette-Messenger (Valparaiso, IN) on July 23, 1993. “A HYPOCRITE IS SOMEONE WHO’S NOT THEMSELVES ON SUNDAY” (shown on a sign) was posted on Facebook by Indian Hills Community Sign on February 19, 2023.
