“A salad without radicchio? That’s just radicchio-less”

Radicchio (a perennial cultivated form of leaf chicory) appears in many jokes as “radicchio-less” (ridiculous). “It’s all the talk about salad-masochism, peas-ophilia, and beets-iality that squashes the deal.  You never know what will turnip when she starts one of her corny rants.  It’s radicchio-less” was posted on the newsgroup alt.radio.talk.dr-laura on August 22, 2000.

Wikipedia: Radicchio
Radicchio (/rəˈdɪkioʊ/ or /rəˈdiːkioʊ/; Italian pronunciation: [raˈdikkjo]) is a perennial cultivated form of leaf chicory (Cichorium intybus, Asteraceae) sometimes known as Italian chicory because of its common use in Italian cuisine. It is grown as a leaf vegetable and usually has colorful white-veined red leaves that form a head. Radicchio has a bitter and spicy taste which mellows if it is grilled or roasted.

Two of my friends had a salad with romaine and radicchio recently.  One of them looked at the other and said “It’s a good thing you used both sorts of greens.  With just the romaine it would have been radicchio-less.”

The bakery lady at Palm Springs Airport couldn’t make salad w/chicken because there was no radicchio. My response: “That’s radicchio-less.”

Well this is simply a radicchioless assertion. Lettuce take a step back endive into the facts: Per the CDC, the contaminated romaine lettuce is from Yuma, AZ; all of the romaine lettuce at Berkeley Bowl right now is from California. Further, the Bowl has several different types of greens to fulfill your salads, wraps, and other ruffage needs. — at Berkeley Bowl.
