“A sign for a strip club during the day: ‘Sorry, we’re clothed’”

“Sorry, we’re clothed”—a pun on the popular “Sorry, we’re closed” sign—has been printed on many images. “On the door of a Los Angeles strip joint, after a police crackdown: ‘SORRY, WE’RE CLOTHED’” was printed in The Telegraph (Folsom, CA) on October 6, 1976. “After Los Angeles police raided a striptease joint, the owner tacked up this sign on the door: ‘Sorry, we’re clothed’” was printed in L. M. Boyd’s syndicated newspaper column in February 1980. “Yesterday’s Cryptoquip: NOTE FOUND ON THE NUDIST COLONY’S OFFICE DOOR: ‘SORRY, WE’RE CLOTHED FOR WINTER’” was printed in the syndicated “Cryptoquip” puzzle in July 2001 newspapers.

New York City-born stand-up comedian Demetri Martin has used the joke in his act, but he did not originate the joke. “What did the sign for the strip club say during the day? Sorry, we’re clothed😀😀 Demetri Martin on Stephen Colberts” was posted on Twitter by yuthame shanmugam on May 23, 2017. “Strip clubs have after-hours signs that say ‘Sorry, we’re clothed’” was printed in TheaterJones (North Texas Performing Arts Center News) on June 21, 2017, in a review of Demetri Martin’s performance.

Alternating Realities
Comedian Demetri Martin has an interesting, and funny, take on the world, as proven in his Majestic Theatre gig.

The world of Martin is one where driverless cars are full of dogs taking joyrides and the rise of robots means we can’t do the robot dance anymore for fear of insulting “technical-Americans.” Where “the capitol of Alaska is A,” strip clubs have after-hours signs that say “Sorry, we’re clothed,” and dildos are the most popular prosthetic limb.

Strip Club Joke
I went to a strip club at lunchtime today but it wasn’t open.
The sign on the door said, “Sorry, we’re clothed”.
