“Drugs may be the road to nowhere, but at least they’re the scenic route!” is a saying that was posted on the newsgroup rec.humor on May 7, 1991. The saying about drugs became popular and was extended to a saying about alcohol.
“Drugs/alcohol may be the road to nowhere, but a scenic road they provide” was posted on the newsgroup alt.drugs.chemistry on November 20, 2005. “Alcohol may be the road to nowhere, but at least its the scenic route” was posted on the newsgroup Osan Bulgogi Hash House Harriers on June 2, 2008.
