“Anarchy is the radical notion that other people are not your property”

“Anarchism is the radical notion that other people are not your property” is a saying that has been printed on several images.

Roderick T. Long, a philosophy professor at Auburn University and head of the Molinari Institute, used the saying “other people are not your property” several times in 2003 and 2004. “The slogan ‘Anarchy is the radical notion that other people are not your property’ – which as far as I can tell I coined ( see here, here, here for the core idea; the rest was borrowed from the more famous slogan ‘Feminism is the radical notion that women are people’ ) – is now available from the Molinari Institute not only as a trendy t-shirt but also as a bodacious button” was posted on Austro-Athenian Empire—Roderick T. Long’s Web Journal on January 15, 2007.

“RT @Free0Radical: Anarchism is the radical notion that other people are not your property—Anonymous #tcot #tlot Ⓐ” was posted on Twitter by Boston Anarchist Bookfair 🏴📚 on November 3, 2011. “Anarchism: The radical notion that other people and their assets are not your property” was posted on Twitter by Ron Getty on October 26, 2013. “Anarchism: The radical notion that other people are not your property” (also shown on an image) was posted on Facebook by Daniel Francis on June 9, 2014.

“Libertarianism: The radical notion that other people are not your property” is a later and similar saying. “Anarchism is the revolutionary idea that you are not state property” and “Anarchism is the revolutionary idea that no one is more qualified than you are to decide your life” are related sayings.

Libertarianism in One Sentence
David Bergland once offered Libertarianism in One Lesson. I would like to offer libertarianism in one sentence.

The most succinct formulation of libertarianism I can think of is this:

Other people are not your property.

We’re happy to announce (somewhat belatedly) the publication of our own Gary Chartier’s Conscience of an Anarchist. Some endorsements:
(...)
“Anarchism, it has been said, is the radical notion that other people are not your property. Gary Chartier eloquently demonstrates that, far from being a recipe for disorder – as the centers of power self-servingly wish us to believe – anarchism is rather the surest foundation for social cooperation, freedom, prosperity, and peace.” – Sheldon Richman (author, Tethered Citizens)
