“Anybody can manage the Yankees”

Baseball’s New York Yankees have been so successful that it’s been said that “Anybody/Anyone can/could manage the Yankees.” The saying has been in print since at least 1933 and 1938.

Wikipedia: New York Yankees
The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team based in the The Bronx, New York. They belong to Major League Baseball’s American League East Division. One of the American League’s eight charter franchises, the club was founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles and moved to New York City in 1903 as the New York Highlanders before becoming the Yankees in 1913. From 1923 to 2008, the Yankees’ home ballpark was Yankee Stadium; in 2009, they moved into a new ballpark, also called Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees lead the league in titles with 27 World Series championships and 40 American League pennants.

But I think I could pick a hundred fellows out of the first hundred I met on the street, and any or all of them could manage the Yankees to another world championship.

“A lot of people say anybody could manage the Yankees and go through to a world series victory,” he (Cincinnati Reds pitcher Paul Derringer—ed.) said. “The Yanks have grand players, of course. But all you have to do is watch them in exhibitions to realize they have a fine manager in Joe McCarthy.”

If Joe can grab off the pennant this year, he will have buried that old but untrue saying, “Anybody can manage the Yankees.”
