“Apple is the default fruit”

An apple has been called the “default fruit.” In many cultures and languages, when people think of a fruit, it is represented as an apple. “Also, apple seems to be the ‘default fruit name’ in various European languages, so you have pomme-de-terre (potato in French), pomodoro (tomato in Italian) and other similar words” was posted on the newsgroup rec.arts.sf.composition on October 24, 2002.

“Apples are the default fruit because red is the default color and A is the default letter think about that” was posted on Twitter by “weston mouth has” on July 20, 2020. “Apple is the default fruit” was posted on Reddit—Showerthoughts on September 8, 2020.

“Chicken is the default meat” and “Water is the default flavor” are related sayings.

Also, apple seems to be the “default fruit name” in various European languages, so you have pomme-de-terre (potato in French), pomodoro (tomato in Italian) and other similar words. So maybe I’d like it better if the fruit was called a redapple (especially if it _wasn’t_ an actual apple), but that’s just my own personal linguistic aesthetics… 😉

When did apples become the default fruit?  Is it really just that they begin with A?

Apple is the absolute archetype of a fruit, it is the default fruit, it is not the fruit of the tree of knowledge but everyone thinks it is, it is the thing the French reference when they don’t know what a food is but it’s probably a fruit.

Oh__no__not__again
In Middle English and as late as 17c., it was a generic term for all fruit other than berries but including nuts (such as Old English fingeræppla “dates,” literally “finger-apples;” Middle English appel of paradis “banana,” c. 1400). Hence its grafting onto the unnamed “fruit of the forbidden tree” in Genesis. Cucumbers, in one Old English work, are eorþæppla, literally “earth-apples”

So your thought was accurate.
