“Applesauce is not a sauce. It’s a purée”

Many people believe that applesauce should not be called a sauce, but a purée. The Wikipedia entry for “purée” states: “Purées of specific foods are often known by specific names, e.g., applesauce or hummus.”

Apple sauce or applesauce is a sauce made of apples. It can be made with peeled or unpeeled apples and may be spiced or sweetened. Apple sauce is inexpensive and is widely consumed in North America and some parts of Europe.

Wikipedia: Purée
A purée (or mash) is cooked food, usually vegetables, fruits or legumes, that has been ground, pressed, blended or sieved to the consistency of a creamy paste or liquid. Purées of specific foods are often known by specific names, e.g., applesauce or hummus. The term is of French origin, where it meant in Old French (13th century) purified or refined.

Why is it called ‘applesauce’ when it’s basically a puree of apples???? What constitutes applesauce as a “sauce”?? What makes sauce, sauce?

Why is applesauce called a “sauce”?
It’s just an apple purée. It’s not something you dip things in.
Same train of thought, why aren’t there other “sauced” fruits on the market? Pear sauce? Guava sauce? Dragonfruit sauce? Grape sauce?

why is applesauce a sauce. it’s the only sauce that we eat plain. i don’t see people chugging marinara, so what gives applesauce the right to be a sauce huh? we don’t use it as a sauce. name it chunky apple purée.

I vote that blended up apples never be called a sauce ever again. Even the ingredient list on a “applesauce“ container will say purée.

applesauce is so weird. its not a sauce bc u dont put it on anything (besides latkes). its a fruit puree but not a smoothie or a jam. you just eat it like pudding or yogurt.  we dont do this with other fruits or veggies. who did this
