Asiantation (Asian + orientation)

The term “oriental” is often regarded as an ethnic slur. Some people jocularly believe that a school “orientation” should be called “Asiantation.”

“Orientation now Asiantation” was posted on the newsgroup rec.autos.makers.ford.mustang on May 19, 1999. “orientation/asiantation” was posted on Twitter by Beth Gramling Sanders on February 12, 2009. “Orientation today and tomorrow. If they’re all into diversity and sensitivity, shouldn’t that be ‘Asiantation’?” was posted on Twitter by Whiskey Sodden Profligate on February 1, 2010. “Orientation is racist! It’s Asiantation!” was posted on Twitter by Passions Network on March 6, 2015.

“My kid’s teacher: Welcome parents and students to orientation. Me, raising hand: Excuse me. I think we call it Asiantation now” was posted on Twitter by Rick Aaron on November 10, 2021.

Wikipedia: Orient
The Orient is a term for the East, traditionally comprising anything that belongs to the Eastern world, in relation to Europe. It is the antonym of Occident, the Western World. In English, it is largely a metonym for, and coterminous with, the continent of Asia, loosely classified into the Near East, Middle East and Far East: the geographical and ethno-cultural regions now known as West Asia, South Asia, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. Originally, the term Orient was used to designate the Near East, and later its meaning evolved and expanded, designating also the Middle East or the Far East.

The term oriental is often used to describe objects from the Orient, however it can be considered an offensive term by some when used to refer to people of East Asian and South East Asian descent.

I don’t know, mxn. I’m also an Asian, and during the summer prior to my freshmxn year in college, I passed out after seeing the word “orientation” and demanded them to change it to “Asiantation.” You need to be more sensitive.
