The saying is frequently credited to American essayist Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), and his book Walden (1854). However, there is no evidence that Thoreau wrote this.

It is a reality where I reside every autumn the trees change their color from green to reds and gold. The winds bring cold weather and scatter the leaves over the ground below. We know before long snow will follow.

Thoreau never said that, as far as I can find out. Lots of stupid “quotes websites” attribute it to him, and lots of ignorant teenagers put it on their Instagrams, but it doesn’t occur in any of Thoreau’s books.
