Baby Raddle/Rattle (chocolate and rainbow sprinkles)

Mister Softee ice cream trucks feature “Baby Raddle”—a soft-serve vanilla ice cream cone with half chocolate sprinkles and half rainbow sprinkles. The Big Gay Ice Cream truck offers a similar “Baby Rattle.”

“Baby Rattle” has been cited in print since at least 2008 and “Baby Raddle” since 2012. The origin of the name is not known. An ice cream cone with half chocolate sprinkles and half rainbow sprinkles is also called a “two face.”

On Ice Cream
To me, nothing stands as a reminder that summer is coming more than Mister Softee.

A Baby Rattle is a chocolate soft-serve cone with sprinkles at the bottom of the cone, creating a rattling sound. I’d usually shake the cone right away, since the longer you kept the cone still, the more the ice cream would melt down and solidify the sprinkles. However, when I shook the ice cream to hear the sprinkles at the bottom, the sprinkles at the top—half chocolate, half rainbow, which was another big draw for the Baby Rattle—would fly off.

We got the BABY RADDLE, a standard vanilla cone dipped in two kinds of sprinkles - chocolate and rainbow.

The Mr. Softee Truck. Really? I mean, the only thing more cruel than setting up a water station less than a third a mile from the finish line is plopping a closed down Mr. Softee ice cream truck on the race route. What I would have done for a double twisted baby rattle (rainbow sprinkles, duh) at that moment, you have no idea.

BIG GAY Ice Cream
Written by aknyc
There’s an ice cream truck(s) in NYC called…you guessed it… Big Gay Ice Cream.

Big Gay ice cream is soft serve and has several creative flavors. We got one called salty pimp and one called baby rattle.

The salty pimp is vanilla soft serve with caramel lining the sides vertically as we’ll as injected into the center, sea salt sprinkled over and then dipped in chocolate. It has a rich and creamy taste offset by just enough salt.

The baby rattle is soft serve vanilla covered by chocolate sprinkles on one side and rainbow (appropriate) on the other. The flavors were not as complex as the salty pimp but for me, you can’t beat vanilla with sprinkles.
