“Ban pre-shredded cheese. Make America grate again!”

“Make America Great Again” is a political slogal that was used by Ronald Reagan (1911-2004) in the 1980s. American businessman and politician Donald Trump used the slogan since at least 2011 (when he thought about running for the 2012 presidential election) and popularized it in 2015 (when he ran for the 2016 presidential election). Trump trademarked “Make America Great Again.”

“Great” is often made into a “grate” cheese pun. “You mean: like politicians in a cheese grater? @TheTweetOfGod Rick Perry will make America grate again” was cited on Twitter on October 24, 2011. “Trump: We will ban the importation of pre-cut cheese from overseas Interviewer: but why Trump: WE WILL MAKE AMERICA GRATE AGAIN” was cited on Twitter on June 16, 2015.

“Trump wants to ban the sale of pre-shredded cheese. He wants to make America grate again” was posted on reddit on February 20, 2016. Wallingford Chevron (Seattle, WA), known for putting witting sayings on its sign, posted in March 2016:

“BAN PRE-SHREDDED CHEESE
MAKE AMERICA GRATE AGAIN.”

Similar “grate” cheese puns include “What do you call a block of cheese that hasn’t been shredded?”/“Ungrateful” and “Why didn’t the cheese want to get sliced?”/“It had grater plans.”

Daily Mail (UK)
EXCLUSIVE: Trump trademarked slogan ‘Make America Great Again’ just DAYS after the 2012 election and says Ted Cruz has agreed not to use it again after Scott Walker booms it TWICE in speech
. Donald Trump tells Daily Mail Online that the line ‘is my whole theme’
. Ronald Reagan first popularized ‘Let’s Make America Great Again’ in 1979 and 1980, and Trump was there to see it as one of his first backers
. Trademark papers were filed in November 2012, indicating how long Trump has been thinking about a serious run for the White House
. Cruz dropped the line into his campaign launch video, but just in passing
. Walker ended his speech Saturday in South Carolina with the slogan, booming it twice for emphasis
. Chris Christie used it at the 2012 Republican National Convention and got a round of applause in Tampa
. Now Trump will own the line for the purposes of ‘promoting public awareness of political issues and fundraising in the field of politics’

Where’s the beef in campaign slogans?

By contrast, Donald Trump has had more success with his new slogan—witness all the Trump supporters proudly sporting their “Make America Great Again” hats that were made in China. The slogan is not really new, of course, but is actually a slightly altered version of “Make America grate again,” an old cheese industry ad campaign encouraging Americans to buy blocks of parmesan.

The neoconservatives overlook another point they share with Trump: the lust for national greatness. Surely they have not forgotten Trump’s goal to “Make America Great Again,” though if they only heard (rather than read) the slogan, they’d be forgiven for thinking he said, “Make America Grate Again.” Either way, cowing other countries is his strategy.
