The “Battle of the ‘Burbs” (New York City suburbs) is when basketball’s Long Island Nets (the development league team of the Brooklyn Nets) play against the Westchester Knicks (the development league team of the New York Knicks). A preseason “Battle of the ‘Burbs” was won by the Westchester Knicks on November 9, 2016, and the series name was used at this time.
 
The Long Island Nets won the first regular season “Battle of the ‘Burbs” on December 26, 2016.
 
When the Brooklyn Nets play the New York Knicks, the game has been called the “Battle of the Boroughs.”

History
In June 2015, Brooklyn Nets announced its intentions to purchase a D-League affiliate. The team announced on November 5, 2015, that they reached a final agreement for their new D-League team, to be called the Long Island Nets, to play in a renovated Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which itself was the home of the Nets during their ABA years. However, due to renovations, the new team played in their parent team’s home, Barclays Center, for their first season.

The Knicks had filed for trademarks for five possible names: New York 914s, New York ‘Bockers, New York Plainsmen, New York Empire, and New York Hutch. On May 14, 2014, the Westchester Knicks name and logo were announced; in addition to retaining the parent club’s “Knicks” name, the Knicks had also incorporated the original “Father Knickerbocker” logo (drawn by Willard Mullin) which was in use by the parent Knicks from the team’s founding in 1946 until 1964.

WHITE PLAINS, NY, November 9, 2016 – The Westchester Knicks, the official NBA Development League affiliate of the New York Knickerbockers, won its lone preseason match-up at home 107-103 against the Long Island Nets, the Brooklyn Nets’ affiliate, in late comeback fashion. One of three new members of the league this season, Long Island joins Westchester as the second NBA D-League team in New York State.
