Battle of the Hudson River or Hudson River Rivalry (New Jersey Devils vs. New York Rangers)

A National Hockey League game between the New Jersey Devils (1982-) and the New York Rangers has been called the “Hudson River rivalry” or the “Battle of the Hudson River.” A National Basketball Association game between the New Jersey Nets (1977-2012) and the New York Knicks also had the same nicknames. The Hudson River separates New Jersey and New York City.

“Knicks beat Nets 126 to 94 in ‘Battle of the Hudson River’” was printed in the New York (NY) Amsterdam News on October 6, 1979. “HOCKEY / New Jersey players think they can upset the Rangers in the battle of the Hudson River” was printed in The Globe and Mail (Toronto, ON) on April 23, 1992. The book Battle on the Hudson: The Devils, the Rangers, and the NHL’s Greatest Series Ever (2012) by Tim Sullivan chronicles the 1994 hockey playoff victory of the New York Rangers over the New Jersey Devils.

“It was billed as the Hudson River rivalry, but to paraphrase former Knick, and now Net point guard, Michael “Sugar” Ray Richardson, it was the sinking of the Knicks’ ship” was printed in the i>Daily World (New York, NY) on December 14, 1985. “(New Jersey Nets Coach Chuck—ed.) Daly said he is looking forward to building a Hudson River rivalry with the New York Knicks” was printed in the Kitchener-Waterloo (ON) Record on May 29, 1992. “Both teams (New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers—ed.), however, seemed to play with much less intensity than they usually do in this Hudson River rivalry” was printed in Newsday (Long Island, NY) on November 1, 1993.

The New York Islanders-New York Rangers rivalry has been called the “Battle of New York.” The Brooklyn Nets-New York Knicks rivalry has been called the “Battle of the Boroughs” and the “Clash of the Boroughs.”

Wikipedia: Devils-Rangers rivalry
The Devils–Rangers rivalry (also known as the Hudson River rivalry or the Battle of the Hudson River), is an ice hockey rivalry between the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers clubs of the National Hockey League (NHL). The two teams are called “cross-river rivals.” This is because Madison Square Garden in Midtown Manhattan, where the Rangers play, is less than ten miles and across the Hudson River from the Prudential Center in downtown Newark (and previously, the Meadowlands Arena in East Rutherford), the home of the Devils. Travel between both arenas is easily accomplished by both road (usually through the Lincoln Tunnel) and rail (along the Northeast Corridor and PATH).

Wikipedia: Knicks-Nets rivalry
The Knicks–Nets rivalry is a crosstown rivalry between New York City’s two National Basketball Association (NBA) teams, the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets. Both teams compete in Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The New York Knicks were established in 1946 as one of the charter franchises of the NBA, and have been based at Madison Square Garden in Midtown Manhattan since 1968. The Nets were established in 1967 as a member of the now-defunct American Basketball Association, and joined the NBA in 1976. They have been based at Barclays Center in Brooklyn since 2012, though have played in the New York metropolitan area their entire existence.

The rivalry began in 1976 when the Nets joined the NBA as part of the ABA–NBA merger. At the time, the team was known as the New York Nets and played at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in suburban Long Island. The team became the New Jersey Nets the following season when they relocated to suburban New Jersey, playing temporarily in Piscataway before moving to Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford in 1981, their home until 2010. The Nets played their final two seasons in New Jersey at Prudential Center in downtown Newark.

Isn’t it great to see a Hudson River Rivalry once again?  The Knicks, despite their changes, look to be one of the NBA’s Best once again.

Shawn, Don’t group all NYR fans together.  When the Rangers got knocked out last year, I rooted for the Dev’s to win it all.  Can’t we all admit that we both have excellent teams that are cup contenders?  If it wasn’t for this Hudson River rivalry, we wouldn’t have anything to talk about.

Battle on the Hudson : the Devils, the Rangers, and the NHL’s greatest series ever
Author: Tim Sullivan
Publisher: Chicago, Ill. : Triumph Books, ©2012.
Edition/Format:   Print book : English
Summary:
“The monumental spring 1994 face-off between the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers is recaptured in this mesmerizing account. Arguably one of the greatest series in NHL history, it changed the face of hockey in the New York metropolitan area through 27 periods in seven games across 13 days, during which Ranger captain Mark Messier guaranteed a game-six victory. The book presents a definitive portrayal of these two determined teams: the Rangers, an original-six franchise desperate to win their first title in 54 years, and the Devils, the underappreciated new kid from across the Hudson River who feverishly wanted to forge an identity of their own. This in-depth retrospective conducts an unforgettable rollercoaster ride of emotions that lives in the hearts and minds of hockey fans forever”
