“Be/Stay alert. Don’t get hurt” is a safety message that has been printed on many images. “Be Alert, Don’t get hurt” was in a safety poem by S. E. Kiser published in many newspapers on October 18, 1922.
 
“In regard to the pedestrian he said a good slogan might be, ‘Be alert—don’t get hurt’” was printed in the Altoona (PA) Tribune on October 30, 1935. “Be alert, don’t get hurt” was printed on the masthead of the Mount Carmel (PA) Item on May 20, 1936. “Be alert. Don’t get hurt” was a winning safety contest slogan printed in the Kansas City (MO) Star on July 11, 1937.
 
“Stay Alert! Don’t Get Hurt” was a message from the Lubbock Junior Chamber of Commerce Safety Committee, printed in the Lubbock (TX) Avalanche-Journal on December 2, 1945.
 
A coordinated national message in November 1948 by many police chiefs was, “Walking is a full-time job, if you are to walk safely, and pedestrians must stay alert so they don’t get hurt.” “A Safety Rule: Stay Alert And Don’t Get Hurt” was printed on the masthead of The Morning Herald (Uniontown, PA) on July 15, 1961.
