Bear Claw (ice cream)

“Bear Claw” ice cream usually is dark chocolate ice cream with chocolate-coated cashews and caramel. “HEB Food Stores of Waco has a new special bear claw ice cream made especially for the Waco market. The cashews in the ice cream are intended to be the bear claws” was printed in the Waco (TX) Citizen on September 21, 1984. “Bear Claw (dark chocolate with chocolate-coated cashews and gooey caramel)” was printed in the Detroit (MI) News on March 14, 1996.

Denali Flavors trademarked “Bear Claw” in 1993, but other companies have produced their own versions.

“Bear Claw” is also the name of a pastry.

The ice cream concept is similar to Denali’s “Moose Tracks” ice cream. Other similar ice creams include “Adirondack Bear Paw”/“Adirondack Black Bear” (upstate New York ice creams) and “Panda Paws” (from Perry Ice Cream of Akron, NY).

Denali Ingredients
1988: The Original Moose Tracks® flavor is developed, an indulgent combination of vanilla ice cream, peanut butter cups and now famous Moose Tracks Fudge® (a decadent dark chocolate thick and salty fudge). The Moose Tracks® name pays homage to a miniature golf course in the upper peninsula of Michigan called “Moose Tracks”. The golf course is located nearby to the first dairy to sell the Moose Tracks® ice cream flavor.

1989-1996:  The Moose Tracks® flavor grows rapidly, and by the end of 1996 it is being manufactured and sold by 34 regional dairy processors/plants in the US.  During this time, new Denali “Alaskan Classics” flavors were introduced: Caramel Caribou, Bear Claw, and more.

We’re chocolate fanatics, so most of us tasted the usual flavors, such as Moose Tracks (vanilla with fudge swirl and mini Hoffman’s peanut butter cups), Mud Pie (coffee with chocolate swirl) and Bear Claws (fudgy ice cream with chocolate-covered cashews).
