Big Apple (brand of Schwalbe bicycle tires, 2003-present)

Schwalbe (a German manufacturer of bicycle tires) introduced a ‘Big Apple” brand in 2003. The fat tires were designed for street riding in urban environments (like the “Big Apple,” New York City).

Wikipedia: Schwalbe Tires
Schwalbe Tires is a brand name of Ralf Bohle GmbH, a German manufacturer of pneumatic tires for bicycles and wheelchairs. Schwalbe produces a wide range of tires for different cycling applications, but is best known for its commuting, touring and utility tires such as the Marathon range. Schwalbe also makes and markets tires for a variety of small wheel sizes, such as used on folding, BMX, children’s, and recumbent bicycles, and on bicycle trailers, a market ignored by some larger manufacturers.

A few weeks ago Jagur started a thread about a new Kenda 29er tire. I remarked that I was looking to replace my IRC Notos tire and might be interested in the Kenda. Joe Marshall (Dumb Blonde) stated that I REALLY wanted a Schwalbe 28 x 2.35 “Big Apple” for my 29er. He was right, but where to buy one? Rod Wylie (teachndad) located the North American Schwalbe distributor in Canada and their web site. Sure enough it’s available for purchase on-line for $34.40 (+$3.75 shipping). A few days later a Schwalbe Big Apple arrived. Naturally, I immediately set out to put the Big Apple on my 29er. Surprise! The Big Apple is too much tire for my frame! The over-the-tire clearance is about minus 1/8”. My 29er has a home made frame that I know doesn’t have much clearance but it’s been fine with the IRC tire.

I have tried every kind of fat slick tire I could get my hands on, and the Schwalbe Big Apple is the best by a wide margin. It has very low rolling resistance and an ability to maintain traction over bumps that is unequaled by any other tire I have used.

UNICYCLE.COM just began carrying the Big Apple Tires—at my prompting, and the tire DOES fit on the Yuni, which (I believe)give a bit more room than the Sem frame.

Word is the Big Apple has less rolling resistance than other 29” tires. All I know is that it give great ride!

hope my 16” Schwalbe Big Apple tires can cope with the snow, considering they’re the same size as the ones on Ciara’s Barbie bike.

Rode beater bike into work today. Nothing like Schwalbe Big Apple (read really fat) tires to get smoothly over spring streets.

I hooked up my Dahon with the Big Apple tires by Schwalbe. They use a technology specifically for urban riding.www.canelasduras.com/schw.jpg

Schwalbe Big Apple Tire Review

These Schwalbe Big Apple Tires are the best bike tires for street riding. My bicycle came with Schwalbe Big Apple Tires, and I have been riding for 5 years without ever having a flat tire. These Schwalbe Big Apple street bike tires are smooth and have excellent traction on pavement. When they are inflates to 70 psi, These bike tires are fast as we’ll. In my opinion, Schwalbe Big Apple Tires are the best street bike tires. If you ride a mountain bike on the street, you need these tires.

Schwalbe Big Apple review at 3600 miles (~5800 km)

Review at 3600 miles/ 5700 km of 26” X 2” (559-50) Schwalbe Big Apple Bicycle tyres

The older tyres where 150g lighter than the replacements but that might/could be accounted for in the wear of the tyre.  The sidewalls of the replacements did feel slightly more pliable but again this might be due to the age of the old tyre, which is roughly 4 to 5 years old. When this bike was conceived balloon bikes were a new concept and the Big Apple tyre was at the fore front of this trend.  Back then 2” was wide but these days they are much wider still.

The idea was that the suspension was more in the tyre rather than the fork, leading to a faster lighter commuter style bike. (great marketing)  Personally I really love these tyres but then I haven’t really used anything else like it.  Wide tyres need much less pressure to have the same equivalent roll resistance of the more traditional narrow road tyre.

I think your tyres are narrower than the Urban Arrow, which started with the widest Schwalbe Big Apple, then moved to Schwalbe Big Ben which are even wider.
