Big Apple Mini Storage

Big Apple Mini Storage was founded in Manhattan in 1974. It is one of a few businesses (like Big Apple Circus, founded in 1977, and Big Apple Moving & Storage, founded in 1979) still in operation that has used the “Big Apple” name since the 1970s.

23 January 2013, New York (NY) Times, “In a Crowded City, Storage Rooms With Amenities” by C. J. Hughes, pg. B7, col. 5:
Self-storage units were believed to have started in California in the 1970s, as places where migrant farm workers could store their belongings during harvest season.

The first in New York came soon after, in 1974, when Danny Maloney Jr. opened the first Big Apple Mini Storage at 229 East 120th Street, though it would be two years before tenants could let themselves in to their own units, Mr. Maloney said.
