Big Apple Minute (WNEW-TV Channel 5, 1980-1987)

New York City television’s Channel 5 (WNEW until 1986, when it became WNYW) featured one minute “Big Apple Minute” segments about New York City metropolitan area attractions, beginning in 1980 until the last segment aired in 1987. Big Apple Minute subjects included the New York Ferry, Brooklyn Museum, Little Italy, Orchard Street, City Island and Wave Hill.

The Big Apple Minutes were shown just before the 10 o’clock news, and at other times of the day as well. Channel 5’s on-air talent from its news and talk show programs usually narrated the Big Apple Minutes.

Channel 5 (WNEW-TV) also broadcast a Sunday movie from 6-8 p.m. that was titled “Big Apple Movie” from 1981 until 1986.

Wikipedia: WNYW
WNYW, channel 5 (UHF digital channel 44), is the flagship station of the Fox television network, licensed to New York City and serving the New York metropolitan area.
(...)
WNEW-TV was the highest-rated independent in New York. From the early 1970s to the late 1980s, channel 5 was available as a regional superstation in large portions of the Northeastern United States, including most of upstate New York, and portions of eastern Pennsylvania and southern New England.

The Fox era (1986–present)
On May 4, 1985, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, which had recently bought a controlling interest in the 20th Century Fox film studio, announced its purchase of Metromedia’s six independent television stations, including WNEW-TV. Upon taking control in nearly one year later, on March 7, 1986 channel 5’s call sign was slightly changed to the present WNYW.
(...)
In 1980, the station began producing one minute vignettes entitled Big Apple Minute featuring the station’s on-air team touring New York City-area attractions, the vignettes lasted until 1987, following the station’s acquisition by Fox and the call letter change in 1986.

This isn’t from my personal collection, but I haven’t found a clean copy of this online, so here’s a 1980 WNEW Big Apple Minute with Bill Boggs touring Little Italy. It’s sublime, what a time capsule. I especially love the guy we see kneading dough. Hairy arms, hairy chest, bushy eyebrows, and a little paper hat on his bald head—you know, for sanitary reasons. No rights held or implied. (If you’d like this video removed for copyright reasons, please contact me rather than notifying YouTube, I will gladly take it down from this channel.)

Published on Apr 3, 2017
First up in this June 1985 WNEW block is a promo for upcoming films of the “Movie Greats” package, then a “10 O’Clock News Next” graphic. That’s followed by Tom Gregory introducing a Big Apple Minute with a brought-to-you-by (and a strangely generic card). Finally, Andrea Kirby hosts a BAM segment about Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan. No rights held or implied.
