“Big Brother is watching you” is a famous saying from George Orwell’s dystopian 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. However, some might possibly find “brother” to be offensive. “Gender neutral non-binary older sibling is watching you” is a jocular saying that has been printed on several images.
 
“Big Sibling Watching You” was printed in the Honolulu (HI) Advertiser on November 27, 1978. “Big Sibling is watching you” was printed in the Canadian Medical Association Journal on March 1984. “Big Sibling is watching you” was printed in Newsday (Long Island, NY) on December 5, 1990. “‘Big Sibling Is Watching You’ has been an anti-PC joke since at least the 80’s” was posted on Twitter by Will Collier on August 8, 2017.

Big Brother is a fictional character and symbol in George Orwell’s dystopian 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. He is ostensibly the leader of Oceania, a totalitarian state wherein the ruling party Ingsoc wields total power “for its own sake” over the inhabitants. In the society that Orwell describes, every citizen is under constant surveillance by the authorities, mainly by telescreens (with the exception of the Proles). The people are constantly reminded of this by the slogan “Big Brother is watching you”: a maxim that is ubiquitously on display.
 
In modern culture, the term “Big Brother” has entered the lexicon as a synonym for abuse of government power, particularly in respect to civil liberties, often specifically related to mass surveillance.
