Butt-chugging (alcohol enema)

The terms “alcohol enema” and “butt-chugging” were popularized in September 2012 (after an incident at the University of Tennessee) and on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show in September 2013. Alcohol taken through the anus enters the liver faster and without the protections of going through the stomach; the fad is very dangerous.

“Alcohol enema” has been cited in print since at least 1995 and 1999. “Butt-chugging” was cited on Twitter on May 12, 2010.

Wikipedia: Alcohol enema
An alcohol enema, colloquially known as butt-chugging, is the act of introducing alcohol into the rectum and colon via the anus. This method of alcohol consumption is dangerous because it leads to faster intoxication since the alcohol is absorbed directly into the bloodstream and neutralizes the body’s ability to reject the toxin by vomiting.

Administration
Two reported alcohol enema techniques are via an alcohol-soaked tampon or a funnel, such as a beer bong, inserted into the rectum.

Effects and dangers
An alcohol enema is a faster method of alcohol intoxication since the alcohol is absorbed directly into the bloodstream. The lower gastrointestinal tract lacks the alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme present in the stomach and liver that breaks down ethanol to make it less toxic for the body. The alcohol will still eventually arrive at the liver, but the high alcohol content could overwhelm the organ. Additionally, consuming the alcohol rectally neutralizes the body’s ability to reject the toxin by vomiting.

1 August 1999, Daily News-Record (Harrisonburg, VA), “Deadly Fads” by Chris Edwards:
Those included the “alcohol enema,” practiced by some youthful binge drinkers who find that infusing alcohol into the colon gets them drunk faster than imbibing.

Um, just FYI, please don’t try it. It can be lethal. You can do that with a 20 oz Coke, and die from caffiene overdose. You anus absorbs stuff at a much higher rate that your intestine does….

Two bottles of sherry, the rest is history

By Lester Haines,  14th January 2008
The 2007 Darwin Award - created to “commemorate those who improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it” - has been claimed by the Texas man whose addiction to alcohol enemas eventually led to a fateful encounter with two 1.5 litre bottles of sherry.

Beer and Alcohol Enemas: A Drinker’s Deathwish

In the pursuit of the ultimate intoxication, someone came up with the idea of putting beer or other intoxicants, in enema form to get drunk. What exactly is a beer, or alcohol enema, and what are the dangers of doing one?
(...)
To perform a beer or alcohol enema, the person partaking of this rectal imbibing has to get the booze into the anus. In order to do this they use a variety of methods ranging from inserting the beer or booze bottle directly where the sun doesn’t shine. Then they bend over to pour it in, or they make use of tubes and funnels or a drip bag and tubes, any method they can to get it in, sometimes even with the help of another person.

PHOENIX (CBS5) -
It’s no secret teenagers sometimes experiment with alcohol, even drugs, but new ways they’re finding to get drunk had jaws dropping in our newsroom.

“Quicker high, they think it’s going to last longer, it’s more intense,” said Dr. Dan Quan from Maricopa Medical Center.

“This is not isolated to any school, any city, any financial area,” Officer Chris Thomas, a school resource officer, said. “This is everywhere.”

Rather than the traditional beer bong you’d find at a college party, kids are sticking the tube elsewhere to get wasted.

They’re calling it “butt chugging.”

Vodka Tampons, ‘Butt Chugging’: Urban Myth or Dangerous Reality?
By Ellen Killoran
on November 14 2011 2:49 PM
Reports of teenagers inserting vodka-soaked tampons in their vaginas and rectums have been circulating the last few days, but it’s not the first time this risky phenomenon has been reported.

Skeptics are questioning the legitimacy of claims that teenagers are using unpleasant-sounding methods of getting drunk faster—largely because the Legend of the Vodka Tampon is a more than a decade old, and because news stories on the topic have not cited firsthand accounts of the phenomenon at work.

Butt chugging was formally known as an alcohol enema. An individual basically “drinks” the fluid into his or her rectum with a tube or hose. The alcohol’s effects come quickly and potently.

Experts: Alcohol enemas ‘extremely dangerous’
By Jacque Wilson, CNN
updated 2:25 PM EDT, Thu September 27, 2012
(CNN)—News of students at the University of Tennessee using “alcohol enemas” to get drunk prompted a slew of comments from CNN readers in disbelief.
(...)
But alcohol enemas are no laughing matter, experts say. One of the Tennessee students was taken to the hospital with a blood alcohol level of 0.40, officials said. That’s five times the legal limit and in what doctors call the “death zone” for alcohol poisoning.

Using an alcohol enema involves placing a small tube into someone’s rectum and pouring alcohol into the colon. Because the alcohol is absorbed directly into the bloodstream, the recipient gets drunk faster.
