BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag)

"BYOB” doesn’t always stand for “Bring Your Own Bottle.” “BYOB Bring Your Own Bag” has been printed on many images. Stores request customers to bring their own bags to be environmentally friendly.

“Bring Your Own Bag” was printed in the Jackson Hole Guide (Jackson, WY) on December 3, 1964. “Seattle (AP)—Safeway grocery stores here are asking customers to BYOB—Bring Your Own Bags” was printed in the Omaha (NE) World-Herald on December 28, 1973.

3 December 1964, Jackson Hole Guide (Jackson, WY), “Ski Club Solves Sack Crisis,” pg. 9, cols. 1-2:
BYOB might have other meanings, depending on your “tastes,” but Friday and Saturday at the shelter it means “Bring Your Own Bag.”

28 December 1973, Omaha (NE) World-Herald, “Bring Your Own Bag,” pg. 12, col. 1:
Seattle (AP)—Safeway grocery stores here are asking customers to BYOB—Bring Your Own Bags—when shopping, Dale Lynch, Safeway manager for Western Washington and Alaska, said customers were asked to bring bags back to the store “because we foresee a tough time in getting an adequate supply beginning in about March.”

2 January 1974, The Sun (Baltimore, MD), “Grocery Prices Up Again” By The Associated Press, pg. A8, col. 6:
The paper shortage has hit some supermarkets and Grand Union stores in Dade COunty, Fla., are trying to counter it with a BYOB progam.

The initials stand for bring your own bag and customers who do get extra trading stamps for each returned bag that is refilled and sent out again with the same customer.
